Learning for the future

Today we often hear about how jobs are being lost to automation, how jobs are being transformed and we see the emergence of new jobs being created. So where does this leave you and your business?

 

In order to succeed, tech skills, learning ability and human skills were identified at the Edtech Conference, October 2018, as key components for future success.

 

In their article What is Digital Economy? Deloitte defines digital transformation as the ability to use the latest technology to do what you already do but in a better way. We already see this done by the implementation of AI to do repetitive, manual jobs more efficient and effective. The demand for other types of skills, in particular tech skills is rapidly growing. We are seeing the emergence of new types of jobs requiring different skill sets, in particular tech skills. The use of powerful platforms such as edtech (educational technology) and MOOCs are providing an answer to addressing skills gaps and upskilling in tech skills in a way that is cost effective, practical and accessible.

 

In order to stay relevant at the same or faster pace than that of change in your industry, learning ability is critical. New ideas, problems and innovations occur so quickly now being ahead of the game requires constant learning. No longer can learning be driven from top down but needs to be owned by individuals. Google is an example of where the ability to think is of greater value over experience and the way that you’ve done things before when recruiting for talent.

 

As technology continues to change the landscape of many industries, the need for learning ability to solve problems, implement new ideas and innovate has never been greater.

 

The importance of human skills has not declined in importance but has rather become increasingly sought after. The ability to think critically, communicate, be creative, empathise, and collaborate are examples of human skills that are needed to work adjacent to technology.

This is not to say that technical skills aren’t important. They are still important in getting the job done, however having strong human or soft skills can result in a higher level of performance.

While machines can be used to collate data, the ability to critically interpret and use it strategically can be used to develop business strategies for success.

Being able to empathise is a key business skill that allows us to build trust and relationships between one another they are also crucial for effective leadership and influencing. Collaboration is another skill that sets us apart. Collaboration encourages creativity and innovation. When collaborating, we have the opportunity to share our individual and original ideas and come up with solutions.

 

Considering these components are a good start to determining whether you and your business have the right skills, mindset and tools to succeed in the future.
